Yi Kuan

Teacher Yi Kuan goes above and beyond by sending translations and notes after our class. We are currently working on advanced vocabulary pertaining to ordering niche foods and drinks. Through learning Cantonese with teacher Yi Kuan I am learning to recognize characters in traditional Chinese. Thank you!!!

We ran through a series of sentences where I'd need to fill in blanks. A great way to test my understanding and keep using the common words and seeing how sentences are structured.

Continued working through the 1000 most common Malay words and using them in sentences. This is definitely the best approach because most sentences use the 1000 most common words.

Today was more of a general chat which is great because it means I'm getting to the stage where that's actually possible!

This lesson was more of a relaxed chat with some test questions at the end. Really helpful as always.

Teacher Yi Kuan makes our Cantonese class so memorable and interesting by conducting the class like a casual conversation you would have speaking to a friend. Not only do we work on vocab, we also discuss cultural phenomenon in Malaysia. This is particularly useful because some of the phrases are regional, and some colloquialisms in KL sometimes differ from those said in Ipoh, where Teacher Yi Kuan is from. My goal in this class is to speak Cantonese with confidence when I visit my family in Penang. Because of my weekly classes with Teacher Yi Kuan, I feel immersed in the language. The regularity of speaking Cantonese with her helps me to remember how to speak it without having to think about it. Perhaps the best thing about Teacher Yi Kuan's class is the way she makes 30 minutes pass by so quickly with lots of laughter and entertaining topics. The class is something I look forward to every week. Thank you!!
