These are some phrases that every British school pupil knows! They may introduce learners to some new phrasal verbs.

Phrases teachers use in British Schools

'Line up' in this context means to stand silently in a queue. Pupils are expected to do this outside the classroom door before the teacher enters.

'Hands up' means 'please raise your hand to speak'. Pupils are expected to do this as opposed to shouting out the answer to a question.

The principal of a British school is traditionally the 'headmaster' or 'headmistress'. All pupils are expected to 'stand' (stand up from their chair) when he/she enters the classroom.

The phrase every teacher has used to a noisy class that will not stop talking and sit quietly! This is normally at afternoon registration before the class is dismissed for the day.

Said in response to a pupil incorrectly asking 'can I [do something]' instead of the more correct 'may I [do something]' - even native speakers get their grammar wrong occasionally! :-)
