Fun Russian Travel Words 🚂

Open sleeping car (train)
This is the budget-friendly open sleeping compartment on Russian trains.  It's a unique social experience where you'll meet locals, share snacks, and hear life stories!

Soviet-era cafeteria (canteen ) where budget travelers eat authentic home-style food. No English menu needed – just point and smile! 😊

Kremlin / fortress. Not just the famous one in Moscow! Nearly every old Russian city has its own Kremlin – a fortified complex in the city center.

Mandatory coat check. In Russia, you MUST check your coat at theaters, museums, and many restaurants. The babushka at the garderob is serious about her job 👵🏻 🫡

Groceries / food store.
Look for this sign when you need groceries. Fun fact: you might still encounter shops where you tell the clerk what you want rather than picking items yourself – old Soviet style!

Underground. The colloquial word for metro. Moscow's metro is famous for being deeper than most and more beautiful (marble, chandeliers, mosaics – like underground palaces!).

Hotel. From the word "gost" (guest). In Soviet times, each floor had a "dezhurnaya" – a stern woman who watched everyone coming and going, held your room key and could make hot water for tea.

Felt boots. Traditional Russian winter boots made from thick wool felt. They look funny but keep your feet incredibly warm in -30°C weather! You'll still see valenki at markets and in rural areas.

This ornate metal container keeps water boiling for tea. Literally means "self-boiler." You'll see decorative ones in museums and working ones at train stations.
