Theatre Terms You Should Know

Prompt side (or P side) is known as stage left (facing the audience). It is called prompt side because that is where the stage manager usually sits, who also needs to prompt actors for their lines if they need it.

Opposite prompt side (or OP side) is stage right (facing the audience). It is called opposite prompt side because it is opposite the person who prompts actors for their lines.

Back stage is everything that is not on the stage for the audience to see.

Down stage is the part of the stage that is closest to the audience.

Up stage is the part of the stage that is further away from the audience.

Centre stage is directly in the middle of the stage.
