A peculiar set of terms and phrases I currently use and hear being used by my Aussie peers.

Australian Slang Survival Guide

Definition: to mean "and there you have it" - used after someone has finished explaining a process. 

"... just screw in the last few nails and Bob's your uncle".

Definition: crammed full of people or things

"The street was chock-a-block with traffic today".

Definition: a man

"He's a good bloke".

The female equivalent is "sheila" but only the word "bloke" for men is more commonly used these days.

Definition: meaning "the whole thing"

"My parent's were musicians so I was taught the whole shebang".

"Do you reckon" or "what do you reckon" is commonly used in place of "do you think" or "what do you think".

Definition: make an attempt

"Have a crack at opening this door".

Definition: an unsophisticated person regarded as being of low social status.

Definition: It will all turn out fine in the end. "She" can be used to refer to any object which is the subject of the sentence. 

 "I had to take the car to the mechanics after the crash but she'll be right."

Definition: to say you really, really like it or are excited for it. (Originating from surf culture).

"Mate, I'd froth a beer after work today".

"Have you seen how good the waves are? I'm frothing for it".

Froth / frothing

Pronounced: FROTH-N

^ noun

Defintion: confirming you are serious about something.

"Thanks mate I'll pay you back, deadset".
OR 
"Thanks mate, deadset I'll pay you back".

Sick 

Definition: awesome.
"I won $500 from the competition!" ~ "No way, that's siiick".

Stoked (STOHKT)

Definition: to feel super happy.
"I'm going on a holiday next week, so stoked".

Hectic

Definition: awesome.
"She's got a hectic singing voice".

What a beauty / she's a beauty (BYOO-TEE): 

Definition: when something looks great.
"What a nice car you have!" ~ "Yeah, she's a beauty".

Spewing (SPYOO-IN): literally means "vomiting" but used to mean you are extremely disappointed or bothered. 

"All the tickets to the concert are sold out already, spewing".

Ways to express sympathy or frustration:

Part 1

Devo: short for devastated but used less drastically. 
"I think I'm too sick to go on this holiday, I'm so devo".
 
Pissed off: very annoyed. 
"The mozzies in my backyard are pissing me off".

Ta: thank you. (Mostly taught to babies and young children, and then used again more commonly by the older generation.)

Legend or "absolute legend!" : to call the person who did you a favour a "legend", meaning they are an icon to you. 

You beauty: an exclamation of satisfaction. Not necessarily calling anyone in particular a "beauty".

Definition: a great deal. 

In Australia it is often used to express quantity. 

"There were heaps of horses in the field today".

Definition: Hiking 

Context: Unless its a tropical rainforest, Aussie's call the rest of Australia's forests "the bush".

Definition: to take a day off work when you aren't actually sick. 

"The weather is so good for the beach tomorrow, I think I'm going to chuck a sickie".

Pronounced: SIK-EE

^ verb

Definition: when a person offers to pay, or it's their turn to buy a round of drinks for everyone. 

"Let's get a pizza, my shout".

"I think it's time for another round of beers, it's your shout right?"

Definition: flip-flops (the sandals you wear to the beach which have a part that goes between your big and second biggest toe)

Definition: the middle of nowhere. 

"He lives out in woop woop."

Definition: The vast interior / rural part of Australia.  

"There are heaps of camels in the outback".

Definition: It's the perfect day for doing the activity that you intend to be doing with your friends. Often used alongside a greeting.

"Day for it!"

Definition: used when the other side/person is not offering a fair deal. 

"I'll swap you my dust pan and broom for your vaccuum cleaner?" ~ "You're dreaming mate".

Pronounced: DREEM-ING

^ phrase

Definition: when someone cancel plans. 

"I had fun day planned with my friend yesterday but she bailed on me."

Lollies - candy 

Snags - sausages 

Capsicum - peppers 

Zucchini - courgette

Rocket - arugula 

Prawns - shrimp (we don't say "chuck a shrimp on the barbie"!!)

Sunnies - sunglasses 

Mozzies - mosquitoes 

Breaky - breakfast 

Undies - underwear 

Arvo - afternoon 

Avo - avocado  

Bottle-o - liquor store
 
Servo - gas station

U-ey (U-EE) - U-turn "chuck a u-ey here"

A cold one: a cold alcoholic beverage 

Roadie: a drink you take with you to change locations (like in the taxi)

Getting on the piss: to drink alcohol heavily
