14 Listening tips for your IELTS exam

    Attempt all questions – there are no penalties for incorrect answers.
    Watch out for plurals in answers. If the question requires a plural answer, a singular answer is incorrect.
    Answers appear in the order they are heard in the audio. They come quickly or with large gaps between them.
    Prepare to hear a potential answer that is not the actual answer. This is common when two people are making plans. They first agree on meeting at a certain time, but then one remembers that they cannot so they decide on a new time.
    Take care when you transfer your answers and pay attention to the word limit for your answers on your answer sheet!
    Multiple-choice answers will ask for a letter (a, b, c, d). Write the letter and not the corresponding answer.
    When asked to complete a sentence using no more than two words, and the correct answer is “leather coat,” then “a coat made of leather” is incorrect. Same goes for numbers.
    Hyphenated words (like “part-time”) are considered as one word.

    Focus on what the speaker is saying not how they say it.
    Don’t take notes in complete sentences – jot down the key points and abbreviate. You only need to write down enough to help your memory later.
    Get the habit of distinguishing between essential and non-essential information. If two people are talking about making plans for a dinner date, the important information is the date/time they finally agree upon. Other dates/times they considered become irrelevant.
    Try to guess what the speaker is going to say. Speakers, will often drop clue words or outline what they will to talk about beforehand. This gives you the ability to start your own outline to then fill in.
    Listen to the audio while reading the audio script. This will help you get a sense of how questions are spaced out, as well as learning some useful common expressions that are frequently used in listening tests.

"A person who’s really inspired me to do something is actually my uncle Dave, who started his own tech company about 5 years ago.He’s now turned it into a highly successful company, employing over 50 people today, which I think is a very inspirational story.

 I’ve always had an interest in anything related to technology, especially computers, and my uncle both inspired and motivated me to make the decision to study computer science in college.

I had to make this decision about 3 years ago, at which time I was at a crossroads in my life, and was at my wits end trying to decide something that I knew would affect my whole future life in a pretty short space of time. However, after getting some inspirational advice from my uncle Dave, I decided to follow in his footsteps, and study computer programming. 

The main reason I find him such an inspiration is that he started this business from scratch, while still only in his early twenties, and within only 3 years turned it into the success it is today. I watched him when he first started in this business, and how he poured his heart and soul into it ,to get the business going, and I’m always so inspired by the way he literally eat’s, sleeps and breathes the business .

 Even though his business has grown so much, he still never  sits back, and keeps working hard to keep growing and expanding the business,and always goes the extra mile, which is something that really motivates, and inspires me to keep studying hard.

Le vacanze a Milano di Alfonso

Sono anni ormai che passo le vacanze del periodo di Natale a Milano, perché nell’azienda dove lavoro, hanno bisogno che io sia presente anche nei giorni tra Natale e Capodanno, così non vale la pena tornare giù fino a Trapani per due giorni soltanto. 
Nonostante abbia molti amici a Milano, per me è sempre strano restarmene qui, al nord, lontano dalla mia famiglia che si trova in Sicilia in quei giorni. Oltre al cibo che trovo un po’ pesante per via dell’uso del burro, un altro aspetto a cui ancora non mi abituo al nord è la temperatura e il clima. Devo ammettere che fin dal primo momento in cui mi sono trasferito a Milano, ho subito avvertito una certa difficoltà ad abituarmi al clima più rigido di Trapani.
“Ma il sole qui quando esce fuori?” 
Ho chiesto una volta, a un collega di Modica.
“Il sole è sempre assente, se lo vuoi allora immaginalo”.
Sono rimasto a pensare al sole nei primi mesi di vita qui, poi col tempo mi sono abituato alla sua assenza. 
Se potessi scegliere dove vivere, andrei a vivere senz’altro in un posto caldo come la Sicilia, perché io sono molto metereopatico e quando il cielo è grigio e fa freddo, mi sento triste. Certo, se avessi studiato per diventare una guida turistica, un cuoco, un insegnante, allora sarebbe stato più semplice vivere al sud e trovare un lavoro in Sicilia. Ma siccome ho studiato per diventare un esperto di storia dell’arte di Milano, allora è difficile trovare lavoro altrove. Tuttavia, a parte il clima, Milano in realtà mi piace molto: è una città energica e divertente, aperta e con carattere. Tanti anni fa, quando ancora vivevo a Trapani, andai in gita con la scuola a Parma, ma non mi colpì la sua architettura come quella di Milano. ......
