Главные торговые операции производились в городских рядах, в помещении, которое называлось амбаром. Вход в амбар был со двора, где всегда было сумрачно, пахло рогожами и стучали копытами по асфальту ломовые лошади. Дверь, очень скромная на вид, обитая железом, вела со двора в комнату с побуревшими от сырости, исписанными углем стенами и освещенную узким окном с железною решеткой, затем налево была другая комната, побольше и почище, с чугунною печью и двумя столами, но тоже с острожным окном: это — контора, и уж отсюда узкая каменная лестница вела во второй этаж, где находилось главное помещение. Это была довольно большая комната, но, благодаря постоянным сумеркам, низкому потолку и тесноте от ящиков, тюков и снующих людей, она производила на свежего человека такое же невзрачное впечатление, как обе нижние. Наверху и также в конторе на полках лежал товар в кипах, пачках и бумажных коробках, в расположении его не было видно ни порядка, ни красоты, и если бы там и сям из бумажных свертков сквозь дыры не выглядывали то пунцовые нити, то кисть, то конец бахромы, то сразу нельзя было бы догадаться, чем здесь торгуют. И при взгляде на эти помятые бумажные свертки и коробки не верилось, что на таких пустяках выручают миллионы и что тут, в амбаре, каждый день бывают заняты делом пятьдесят человек, не считая покупателей.
