Another chance to develop your interrogative (question) sentence writing skills

There are several ways to construct interrogative sentences.

The most difficult part of learning interrogative structures is getting used to the inverted subject and verb = Verb + Subject.
The best way to learn this difficult structure is to practice writing using the inverted subject and verb structure.

This little exercise will focus on creating questions using various auxiliary verbs.

The inverted pattern/form/structure of the sentence is as follows:
Auxiliary verb + Subject + Main verb

Your Challenge and Contribution to this Discussion

Read the examples below, then write at least one sentence using each of the auxiliary verbs.

Possible auxiliary verbs include:

- be
- do
- have
- modal verbs (the main verb used with modal verbs is always in the bare infinitive form (infinitive without the 'to')... can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must

I will correct any errors, but only if you ask me to make corrections.

***********************************************************

Remember: Auxiliary verb + Subject + Main verb

- Are you coming to the party?

- Do you want to go to the party?

- Have you decided to go to the party?

- Can you come to the party?

- Could you bring me to the party?

- May I invite a friend to your party?

- Might the party be cancelled? [NOTE: this is an unusual, uncommon use of the verb 'might', and the sentence is rather formal]

- Will the party be cancelled?

- Would you like to go to the party?

- Shall I pick you up to take you to the party? [using 'shall' is a tad formal - normally we would say "Do you want me to... OR Should I...

- Should we bring a bottle of wine to the party?

- Must we RSVP before the party? ['must we' is formal, so we usually say "Do we have to RSVP... "]

[NOTE: RSVP or R.S.V.P. is a French expression (verb and noun) that has been integrated into English.
RSVP means: r(épondez) s('il) v(ous) p(laît) = please reply (to a written or verbal invitation)]
