Improve your research skills and become an independent learner When learning a language it is important to be able to find resources by yourself. Here’s a short activity you can try out today to improve your research skills. 1. Think of 3 topics that you are interested in or 3 questions you want the answers to and enter them into a search engine. They could be anything, from English grammar points you’re confused about to explanations about a specific scientific topic. 2. Look for the 3 most relevant links in the search results and read through their contents. Give each link a rating out of 5 stars according to how well they answered your question/explained your topic. 3. Do this for a few topics and select one link for each topic/question that you found the most useful. Make a list of these and now you have a short resource list to refer to! You could even find explanations or the answers to similar questions on these links that you’ve selected so it’s good to keep a list of them. 4. Do this every few days for a month and eventually, you’ll have a list of reliable resources for any topic/question you might have. When should you use 'can' and when should you use 'could'? 'Could' is the past tense of 'can' and is often used for simply indicating past tense. However, 'could' is also used for suggestions and requests. 1. 'You could try a new exercise routine.' (Suggestion) 2. 'Could you lend me your book for a few days?' (Request) Note: 'Can' is also correct for this question as it is used often in everyday English, but 'could' is more polite or more tentative. 'Can' is used for giving or refusing permission to do something. 1. 'Yes, you can borrow my book.' 2. 'No, you can't borrow my book.' Note: some people consider this usage of 'can' as incorrect and say that instead of 'can' you should use 'may'/'may not' (which is mostly reserved for very formal situations).
