Yesterday my colleague asked me to move in again. After knowing that I am living in a barber shop and the barber didn't ask me to pay during summer holiday (because he said he couldn't find a renter like me), she finally gave up. I still remember that an Italian musician played and sang Jiang Kui's "An Xiang" for me. It was the first time I had heard that song played on the guitar and found it unbearably sad. Some things can only be understood firsthand. When I was young, I heard someone playing Jiang Kui's melody. I enrolled in a guqin class. At that time in my life, I was stressed, so I had to give it up. Perhaps only people who move frequently can understand the travels in Jiang Kui's mid and later life. "But now your poet is getting old, and he has forgotten the love and lyrics; yet, he still resents the few flowers beyond the bamboo, for their chilling fragrance has crept into his chamber."

I wonder how some people manage to balance things out between their families and their works at their jobs. Employers expect from us to be totally work focused during the working hours. I think it is difficult to be on work mood daily, because family issues play a major role of maintaining our mental health, which shape the mood positively or negatively before starting a working day. I think it is impossible to separate the mental health from the performance at work. Not only the mental health is the main reason of effecting the work performance, the physical health is considered a vital cause as well. When we are negatively inflicted by the mental and the physical health, that means we are in a vulnerable situation in terms of enjoying the jobs and maybe further in terms of loosing them.

How do you encourage active participation and critical thinking in your classes, especially when dealing with students who may be more reserved or hesitant to speak up? That’s an excellent question. To encourage active participation and critical thinking, I begin each class with an icebreaker activity to help students feel comfortable speaking. I also establish ground rules for a respectful and open environment, emphasizing adherence to university harassment guidelines, respecting diverse perspectives, and fostering constructive discussions. Recognizing that many students fear judgment, I make it clear that our class is a space for learning rather than competition. I reassure them that our goal is to grow together, not to showcase individual skills. Additionally, I bring enthusiasm to my teaching. When students see my dedication and passion, they respond more positively, which naturally increases their engagement.
