おにぎりがある棚からあるおにぎりが目についた、それは明太子だ。私は漢字が少し読める。
最初の字は[明] 明日や明るいの漢字だ、次は[太]
太いや太陽の漢字だ、最後に[子] 子供や餃子(ぎょうざ)に使われている漢字だ。写真を見ても何か全然わからない。緊張するが店員に聞くことにした。一人の店員がおにぎりの棚の横で新しいサラダの商品を補充していた。その男は若くて長い黒髪を後ろで束ねていた。インナーメッシュをしてあるようで水色の髪が少し耳のあたりから見えた。

私「　すみません、、」
店員A 「はい、」
私「これはなんですか？」
店員A「おにぎりです。」
私「このピンク色の写真の物はなんですか？」
店員A「 明太子　(め•ん•た•い•こ) です。」
私「めんたいこ？？」
店員A「明太子とは魚のたらのたまごです」
私「どんな味ですか？」
店員A「塩の味が強くて、めんたいこの風味があります。」
私「わかりました、買います。どうもありがとうございました！」

私は会話が終わったとたんどっと疲れた。緊張はまだ残っているが、汗ばんだ両手で明太子と梅のおにぎりを一つずつ持ちレジへと向かった。

I noticed a  onigiri from the shelf with onigiri, it is cod roe. I can read a few kanji. The first character is [mei], which means tomorrow or bright, the next is [tai], which means thick or sun, and the last is [ko], which is used for children or gyoza (dumplings). I had no idea what it was even though I looked at the pictures. I was nervous, but decided to ask the staff. One of the staff was restocking new salad items next to the onigiri (rice ball) shelf. The man was young and had long black hair tied back. He seemed to have an inner mesh, and a little bit of his light blue hair was visible around his ears.


I  "Excuse me," 
Staff A  "Yes," 
I "What is this?" 
Staff A  "It's an onigiri." 
I  "What is this pink thing in the picture?" 
StaffA  "It's mentaiko." 
I  "Mentaiko? 
Staff A  "Mentaiko is the egg of cod roe" 
I  "What does it taste like? 
Staff A  "It has a strong salt taste and mentaiko flavor. 
I  "Okay, I will buy it. Thank you very much!" 

I was exhausted as soon as the conversation ended. My nerves were still in place, but with sweaty hands I took one mentaiko and one ume onigiri and headed for the cash register.

Where Malayalam sits in its family, who its relatives are, and what you get free if you ever study another one.

Malayalam belongs to the Dravidian family: around twenty-six languages, depending how you count, and roughly a quarter of a billion speakers. Four have long literary traditions and official status — Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken.

THE BRANCHES
SOUTH DRAVIDIAN — Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and also Tulu around Mangalore, Kodava in Coorg, and the small languages of the Nilgiri hills: Toda, Kota, Irula, Badaga.
SOUTH-CENTRAL — Telugu, the largest by speakers, with Gondi and others.
CENTRAL — several smaller languages of central India.
NORTH DRAVIDIAN — which contains the fact that makes this family interesting to everyone.

THE OUTLIER
Brahui is a Dravidian language, and it is spoken in Balochistan, in Pakistan — roughly two thousand kilometres from the nearest other Dravidian speech, with the entire Indo-Aryan north in between. Whatever the explanation, it is a genuine puzzle sitting inside an otherwise tidy map.

Hi everyone! Welcome back to Thai T la nid podcast. today we’re going to learn about some similar sounding Thai words.

Well, one thing to know about Thai language is that Thai is a tonal language. So, there are some words that could sound very similar, but totally have different meanings.

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about the words ขาว, เขา, ข่าว, เข่า, ข้าว and เข้า. Yeah, I know, I know they sound super similar but let’s take a look at each of them closely together.


1. ขาว (kǎao) = white
- with long vowel and rising tone.

ฉันชอบสีขาว (chǎn chôp sěe kǎao)
I like white.

2. เขา (kǎo) = he, him, mountain
- with short vowel and rising tone.

เขาเป็นหมอ (kǎo bpen mǒr)
He is a doctor.

3. ข่าว (kàao) = news
- with long vowel and low tone.

คุณได้ยินข่าวนั้นรึยัง (kun dâai-yin kàao nán rêu yang?)
Have you heard about the news?


4. เข่า (kào) = knee
- with short vowel and low tone.

ฉันเจ็บเข่า = (Chǎn jèp kào) 
My knee hurts.

5. ข้าว (kâao) = rice
- with long vowel and falling tone.

ไปกินข้าวกัน (bpai gin kâao gun)
Let's go eat!

**Thai people say "gin kâao" and the word "kâao" refers to "meal" like breakfast, lunch and dinner.


6. เข้า (kâo) = to enter, to get in, to get into
- with short vowel and falling tone.

พวกเขาเพิ่งเข้าไปในบ้าน (pûuak kăo pêrng kâo bpai nai bâan)
They've just got into the house.

All right, let’s hear these six words again.

1. ขาว (kǎao) = white

2. เขา (kǎo) = he, him, mountain

3. ข่าว (kàao) = news

4. เข่า (kào) = knee

5. ข้าว (kâao) = rice

6. เข้า (kâo) = to enter, to get in, to get into

So, short and long vowels can make it different meanings.
