Class 20. Street Malayalam — how to understand people the moment they stop speaking slowly. You studied hard. You know the past of "to be" is ആയിരുന്നു (aayirunnu). Then a man in a Kochi shop says something like ആർന്നു (aarnnu) and your studying seems to evaporate. It has not. Aarnnu IS aayirunnu, with the middle folded in. THE PRINCIPLE THAT REMOVES THE FEAR No language is spoken the way its textbooks are printed. English says gonna, wanna, hafta, dunno — still English. Malayalam does the same, with one gift: **Malayalam only ever subtracts.** It cuts, shrinks, drops and merges, but it never adds a sound. (English adds — say "go away" and you insert a w.) So every fast form you will hear in Kerala is a shortened version of a full form you already know. Street Malayalam is not new vocabulary. It is a small set of demolition rules. THE FLAGSHIP CONTRACTION ആയിരുന്നു → ആർന്നു (aayirunnu → aarnnu). Because aayirunnu sits inside dozens of compound tenses, this single cut echoes through the whole verb system: • ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു → ഉണ്ടാർന്നു (undaayirunnu → undaarnnu) there was / had • ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു → ഇല്ലാർന്നു (illaayirunnu → illaarnnu) there wasn't • വേണമായിരുന്നു → വേണാർന്നു (venamaayirunnu → venaarnnu) wanted to • ചെയ്യണമായിരുന്നു → ചെയ്യണാർന്നു (cheyyanamaayirunnu → cheyyanaarnnu) should have done • ആയിരിക്കും → ആരിക്കും (aayirikkum → aarikkum) probably is THE FIVE DEMOLITION RULES 1. Drop a v between vowels — ആവും → ആഉം 2. Cut the middle syllable — the ayi cut above 3. Cut the tail — എന്താണ് → എന്താ (enthaanu → enthaa) 4. Soften the heavy -nn- — ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട് → ചെയ്യനുണ്ട് 5. Fuse the chain and link the joints The showcase: ചെയ്യനുണ്ടായിരിക്കും, five syllables of pure grammar, compresses in real speech to cheyyanundaarkkum — three syllables, meaning fully intact.
