Did you know that ancient Greece had a huge influence on modern thought? Well, here are ten words which come from that time and culture.

Chaos: Derived from the Greek word "khaos," meaning "abyss" or "emptiness," chaos refers to a state of disorder or confusion.

Democracy: Rooted in the Greek words "demos" (people) and "kratos" (power), democracy embodies the concept of government by the people.

Philosophy: Stemming from the Greek words "philos" (love) and "sophia" (wisdom), philosophy encompasses the pursuit of knowledge and the exploration of fundamental questions about life and existence.

Marathon: Inspired by the Greek city of Marathon, this word signifies a long-distance race that originated from the historical Battle of Marathon.

Eureka: Popularized by the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes, "eureka" expresses the exhilaration of discovery or a sudden realization.

Drama: Derived from the Greek word "drama," meaning "action" or "deed," drama refers to a form of literature or performance that portrays characters and conflicts.

In these past months, it seems that a lot of political drama has been spinning around like a 24/7, in my world, in other people's world, everywhere. That has brought my memories to a bedtime story that I will never forget. I still can picture in mind how the book looked like, how I sat next to Mom as she read the book to me. The title was, "The Man, The Boy, and The Donkey". At that time I thought, "This boy and his father are foolish." That's why I couldn't forget the story. 

However, as I grew up, I realized that indeed, yeah, stupid things I do. Even worse, I do it because I have been told to.

日本人は何個ぐらい漢字を覚えているんですか？と聞かれることがあります。
人によって差はあると思いますが、日本人は平均3000字ぐらい読めるそうです。
日本人のほとんどが書ける漢字より読める漢字の方がかなり多いと思います。
特に大人になると漢字を手で書くことが少ないので、漢字が書けなくなります。
私も漢字がどんどん書けなくなっていることを感じています。
本やニュースを読んでいると読めない漢字もあります。
そういう時は話の流れで意味を推測したり、その漢字を辞書で調べます。

生徒さんから「漢字はどうやって覚えたらいいですか」とよく聞かれます。私はやはり書いて覚えることが一番だと思います。なぜ書くことが大事かというと、書くとその漢字の形がよくわかるからです。例えば、「体」と「休む」の漢字はとてもよく似ています。書かなくても、話の流れで、「体」と読むのか「休む」と読むのかがわかるかもしれません。でも書いてみると、その二つの漢字の違いがよく分かり、話の流れが分からなくても何について書いているのかが分かるようになります。

そして漢字について一番大事なことは正確に読めることだと思います。本を読んだり、ニュースを読んでいる時は読み方を間違えていても、問題ありません。でも、その間違えた読み方を使って話すと、相手はあなたが言いたいことを理解できません。せっかく覚えた単語が、伝わらないのは悲しいですよね。だから、正確な読み方を覚えるのはとても大切です。

最後に「漢字は書けた方がいいですか」と聞かれます。正直、日本で生活をしていて、漢字を書く機会はほとんどありません。もし、書かなければいけないときは、分からない漢字をスマホで調べて書けばいいと思います。でも、スマホで調べるときに、間違えた読み方を入力すると、スマホはあなたが知りたい漢字を教えてくれません。なので、正しい読み方を覚えることはとても大事だと思います。

みなさんは漢字が得意ですか？
漢字を覚えるのは難しいですが、漢字が読めると日本語でマンガや本を読めるようになり、日本語を勉強するのがもっと楽しくなると思います。
