قلت: «اسمي عبد الله». فقال: «ما أكثر عبيد لله وما أعظم متاعب الله بعبيده! فهلَّا دعوتَ نفسك: سيد الشياطين، وأضفتَ بذلك إلى مصائب الشياطين مُصيبة جديدة؟» قلتُ: «اسمي عبد الله، وهو اسم عزيز أعطاني إيَّاه والدي يوم ولادتي، فلن أُبدله باسمٍ آخر.» فقال: «إن بليَّة الأبناء في هِبات الآباء، ومن لا يحرم نفسه من عطايا آبائه وأجداده، يظل عبد الأموات حتى يصير من الأموات.
فحنيتُ رأسي مُفكرًا بكلماته، مُسترجعًا إلى حافظتي رسوم أحلام شبيهة بحقيقته. 
ثم عاد فسألني قائلًا: «وما صنعتك؟» قلت: «أنظم الشعر وأنثره، ولي في الحياة آراء أطرحها على الناس.»
 فقال: «هذه مهنة عتيقة مهجورة لا تنفع الناس ولا تضرهم.» قلت: «وماذا عَسَى أن أفعل بأيامي ولياليَّ لأنفع الناس؟»
