안녕하세요, 여러분! 그거 아세요?
영어에서도 많이 쓰는 표현 TMI는 한국에서 사뭇 다르게 쓰이고 있다는 사실!

일반적으로 영어권에서는 TMI가 “Too Much Information”의 약자로, 듣고 싶지 않거나 불편한 개인적인 정보로 사용되죠. 예를 들어, 친구가 갑자기 본인의 신체나 건강 상태에 대해 불필요하게 자세히 설명하면 “TMI!” 하고 말할 수 있어요.

그런데 한국에서는 TMI가 조금 다르게 쓰여요. 한국에서는 TMI가 꼭 불편한 정보만을 뜻하지 않아요. 오히려 "별로 중요한 정보는 아닌데, 굳이 알고 싶지 않아도 되는 사소한 정보" 정도로 사용하는 거죠. ‘쓸데없는 소소한 정보’ 정도로 이해하시면 돼요.

이 표현의 예로 최근 카리나가 커버하면서 인기를 끌고 있는 노래 [그거 아세요?]를 소개해 드릴게요. 이 노래의 가사는 사실 TMI 그 자체라고 볼 수 있어요. 
가사 중 일부는 이런 식이에요: 

“귤에 붙어 있는 하얀 거 이름은 귤락입니다." "The white stuff on tangerines is called gyullak."
"찰떡아이스는 세 알이었고," "There are three mochi balls in Chaltteok Ice Cream."
"하와이안 피자는 캐나다에서 만들었죠." "Hawaiian pizza was actually created in Canada."
"제가 또 계란을 기가 막히게 삶습니다.” "I can boil eggs perfectly."

이 가사를 모르는 외국인들이 들으면, 카리나의 목소리가 애절해서 진지하게 들릴 수도 있겠죠. 하지만 실제로 가사를 보면 사소하고 유머러스한 내용들이 많아요. 가벼운 TMI들이 노래 안에 담겨 있는 거죠. 그래서 이 노래를 들으면 한국에서는 TMI의 새로운 의미가 떠오르게 됩니다.

또 일상에서는 "이건 TMI인데.." 라고 하면서 아주 쓸데없는 이야기를 부가적으로 하거나,
“오늘 아침에 양말 두 개나 잃어버렸어” 같은 소소한 말에 “오 TMI네?” 하고 웃기도 해요. 
비슷한 표현으로는 "안물안궁","I didn't ask, and I don't care"이 있죠.
이처럼 한국어에서 TMI는 다양한 맥락에서 유머로도 쓰이니까,

I have a lot of interesting topics to talk about. But of course, you are welcome to bring up your own topic.

In this episode, I want to show you one example of the discussion topic. It’s about my imaginary city, Subara City 素晴市 （スバラしsu ba ra shi）.   The name is derived from 素晴らしい（すばらしい）and 都市（とし）.   素晴らしい means “wonderful”, “magnificent”.    市 means “city” and when placed at the end of a word can be pronounced as “shi”し.   So here I name my imaginary city 素晴市（スバラしsu ba ra shi）or “Subara City”.  In this episode, I’m introducing English lessons, not Japanese. I just want to let you know how I made up the name.

The theme of the story is that you have just been elected to the council for Subara City. You have 6 billion Yen in your budget. What can you do? Listen through. Below here is a simple worksheet to give you more ideas.

(1) Carbon Footprint
Main cause of pollution is old factories on the edge of the city. They have to be relocated.
