Antes de casarse con Frida Kahlo en 1929, Diego Rivera contrajo nupcias con la novelista Guadalupe Marín en 1922. La recepción de la boda se llevó a cabo en el Café de Tacuba.

Entre los varios presidentes que solían comer en este gran restaurante, Porfirio Díaz es el más recordado. De igual forma, el compositor Agustín Lara gustaba de visitar el lugar y deleitarse con los riquísimos platillos de la cocina mexicana.

Un 25 de junio de 1936, un atacante entró al Café de Tacuba y le disparó al entonces gobernador de Veracruz, Manlio Fabio Altamirano Flores. El político se encontraba comiendo con su esposa, y poco sabía que esa iba a ser su última comida?

En 1978 se filmaron algunas escenas del filme Los hijos de Sánchez, una cinta que se basó en la novela de Oscar Lewis, The Children of Sanchez. Cabe aclarar, que el autor de este libro se inspiró en uno de los primeros empleados del Café de Tacuba para el personaje de Santos Hernández.

En 1999 un incendio quemó una buena parte del salón principal. Afortunadamente, las llamaradas solamente arrasaron con un poco del mobiliario y algunos objetos de decoración. La estructura del salón quedó intacta, gracias a la labor de los bomberos que llegaron al pronto rescate. Como agradecimiento, el restaurante los invitó a desayunar una vez que el Café de Tacuba volvió a abrir sus puertas.
