Relative Clauses in Malayalam — How to Say "The Man Who Came Yesterday" | Learn Malayalam #103
Beschreibung
How to say "the house I bought last year" in Malayalam — the structure that separates speaking in fragments from speaking like an adult.
You can already say വലിയ വീട് (valiya veedu) — the big house. You can say എന്റെ വീട് (ente veedu) — my house. But you cannot yet say the house I bought last year, or the man who came yesterday, or the film we watched together. Those are relative clauses: a whole sentence used as a description.
Here is the key fact, and it is the one that unlocks everything. Malayalam has NO relative pronouns. There is no word for who, which or that in this sense. Instead the entire describing clause goes IN FRONT of the noun, and the verb inside it takes a special ending.
വന്ന ആൾ (vanna aal) — the person who came. Two words. Literally: came person.
English puts the description after the noun and hangs it on a pronoun. Malayalam puts it in front and marks it on the verb. It feels completely upside down for about a week, and then it feels better than English — because there is no pronoun to choose and no clause dangling behind you.
In this class:
• The relative participle endings for past, present and future
• വന്ന (vanna) who came · വരുന്ന (varunna) who comes or is coming
• How to stack an entire sentence in front of a noun without losing the thread
• Why Malayalam word order stops feeling strange once you see this one pattern
