Malayalam Proverbs — Part 4: Belling the Cat and the Sayings the World Shares | Learn Malayalam #132
Beschreibung
Some Malayalam proverbs exist almost word for word in English, Arabic, Chinese and Latin, and they got there by travelling.
Ten more sayings, some purely Kerala, some shared with the world. The Kerala ones include the bull that gave birth (acting on absurd news) and the person pretending to sleep. The shared ones include belling the cat, crocodile tears, oil on the fire and clapping with one hand. The most Kerala of all is dissolving asafoetida in the sea.
Words and phrases in this class:
കാളപെറ്റെന്ന് കേട്ടപ്പോൾ കയറെടുക്കുക (kaalapettennu kettappol kayaredukkuka) – fetching a rope on hearing the bull gave birth
ആറ്റിൽ കളഞ്ഞാലും അളന്ന് കളയണം (aattil kalanjaalum alannu kalayanam) – even if you throw it in the river, measure it first
ഉറങ്ങുന്നവനെ ഉണർത്താം (urangunnavane unarthaam) – you can wake one who is sleeping
ഉറക്കം നടിക്കുന്നവനെ ഉണർത്താൻ പറ്റില്ല (urakkam nadikkunnavane unarthaan pattilla) – you cannot wake one pretending to sleep
