Class 48. Nature and Kerala life — the monsoon, the water and the trees, in a place where the weather is a character in every conversation. WHY THIS CLASS EXISTS, AND IT IS NOT SCENERY In Kerala, weather is not small talk. It is a daily, consequential subject. The state receives around 3,000 mm of rain a year, its economy has always run on that rain, and every person you meet has an opinion about whether it came early, came late, or came too hard. **If you can talk about rain in Malayalam, you can talk to anybody, any day, about something they genuinely care about.** That is worth more than a hundred polite phrases. THE WATER, BECAUSE KERALA IS MADE OF IT കായൽ (kaayal) the backwaters — the lagoon network behind the coast, and the soul of Kuttanad, where rice is farmed below sea level. പുഴ (puzha) a river — hold that zh, curled back, touching nothing. It is in the name of half the towns in Kerala. തോട് stream or canal · കുളം a pond, and a Kerala house traditionally had one for bathing · അരുവി a brook · വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടം waterfall, literally a water-leap · കടൽത്തീരം the seashore, sea plus edge · വയൽ paddy field · കുന്ന് hillock · പാറ rock. THE MONSOON — AND MALAYALAM IS PRECISE WHERE ENGLISH IS VAGUE Malayalam does not have one word for rain seasons. It has several. കാലവർഷം (kaalavarsham) — the southwest monsoon. Kerala's great rain, arriving around 1 June. Kerala is the first place in India the monsoon touches, and the entire country watches Kerala for it. ഇടവപ്പാതി (idavappaathi) — a beautiful word. It means the middle of the month of Idavam, which is when that first monsoon breaks. **Malayalam names the rain by the point in its own calendar when it arrives.** തുലാവർഷം (thulaavarsham) — the retreating monsoon, the second rains of October and November.
