In a Malayali family or neighbourhood, a very large share of all conversation is about children. You get the words for the child, from കുട്ടി and കുഞ്ഞ് to മകൻ, മകൾ and മക്കൾ, and the questions every parent is asked: how many children, how old, which class, and above all, did the child eat? Then the plain commands you use with children, the polite forms you must switch to with elders, and മിടുക്കൻ, the praise that lights up a child's face. It ends with how Kerala raises children communally, with grandparents often the main carers. Words and phrases in this class: കുട്ടി (kutti) – child കുഞ്ഞ് (kunju) – baby; a term of endearment മക്കൾ (makkal) – children (one's own) എത്ര മക്കളുണ്ട്? (ethra makkalundu?) – how many children do you have? കുട്ടിക്ക് എത്ര വയസ്സായി? (kuttikku ethra vayassaayi?) – how old is the child? ഏത് ക്ലാസ്സിലാണ്? (ethu klaassilaanu?) – which class is the child in? കുട്ടി കഴിച്ചോ? (kutti kazhicho?) – did the child eat? വാ (vaa) – come (to a child) ഇരിക്ക് (irikku) – sit (to a child) തൊടരുത് (thodaruthu) – don't touch പതുക്കെ (pathukke) – slowly മിടുക്കൻ, മിടുക്കി (midukkan, midukki) – clever boy, clever girl കുട്ടിക്ക് വാശിയാണ് (kuttikku vaashiyaanu) – the child is being stubborn In this class: • Child, baby, son, daughter: the core family words • The questions every parent hears, and why കഴിച്ചോ comes first • Plain commands for children, polite forms for elders • Praise, mischief and stubbornness, and Kerala's shared child-raising Quizzes below.
