Эпизод 15. Загадочный материк - Антарктида

In this story, a snowman named Jingle is a selfish husband whose job is more important than his marriage. This is Part 4 of 5. 

The dance group had met in the morning for a quick rehearsal. Today was their last day to practice before the big show. 

Even though the other dancers commented that it was already good enough, Jingle and the winking snowwoman worked very hard on their close embrace. 

Then, while everyone was packing up, getting ready to go distribute their flyers… 

Ding-ding ding-ding 

The ringing came from behind Jingle. He said, “Ugh… Doesn’t Candy know how stressed I am? What does she want now?” 

He turned, but instead of his wife, he saw his snowman neighbour. Confused, Jingle went over to talk. 

“You look disturbed,” said Jingle. 

“It’s Candy. She’s been hit by a car.” 

Jingle was shocked. He noticed the neighbour was holding a candy cane. 

“This is her cane. I picked it up after the accident. I immediately called an ambulance and she was taken straight to the hospital. It’s bad, Jingle, really bad. Come with me, let’s go together.” 

Jingle hesitated. He looked at the candy cane, then at the dance group in the distance. Then back at the candy cane. 

“Thank you for bringing me this. But I can’t go with you. I’ve got to distribute these flyers today. It’s our last chance, and the whole group is counting on me. They need me. Tell Candy I’ll be there after work.”

Jingle the Snowman

Per le prossime vacanze Jimmy ha organizzato un viaggio in solitaria: farà il giro d’Europa. Partirà da Venezia con il treno ad alta velocità e arriverà a Milano, città in cui non è mai stato. Trascorrerà il fine settimana lì per visitare i migliori musei della città, il palazzo Sforzesco, la Pinacoteca di Brera e il teatro La Scala.
Poi proseguirà per Torino e infine raggiungerà Aosta, da dove partirà per il monte Bianco. Per una settimana farà trekking in montagna, mangerà cibo nuovo e si godrà i bei panorami del monte più alto d’Europa.
Da Aosta raggiungerà la Svizzera: vuole visitare la città multiculturale di Ginevra e poi si recherà in Francia, a Parigi. Ha deciso che affitterà un piccolo monolocale a Mont Martre per vivere il centro artistico della città. A Parigi comprerà un biglietto aereo per volare Oltre Manica e raggiungere la bellissima Londra. Andrà a trovare la sua famiglia per qualche giorno: gli mostrerà le foto del suo viaggio e gli racconterà della sua vita a Venezia. Da Londra volerà in Germania, andrà a visitare il muro di Berlino e poi noleggerà una macchina per andare a bere birra a Monaco di Baviera.
Da Monaco di Baviera è facilissimo tornare in Italia: basta prendere un treno per il Trentino e in poche ore sarà sulle Dolomiti, dove passerà un giorno di relax alle terme prima di tornare a Venezia.

PATTY: I’m really excited for Aunt Mary’s surprise birthday party
this afternoon! Aren’t you?
SUSAN: Yeah! How old is she?
PATTY:  She’ll be 55 on May 14 [fourteenth].
SUSAN: Wow! I didn’t know that my mom was older — she’s going
to be 57 on September 2 [second]. Anyway, Aunt Mary’s 
going to be so surprised to see us all here!
PATTY: I know! But we still have to get all the food set up before 
she gets here … OK! We’re all ready now. Shh! She’s here!
ALL: Surprise!


LANGUAGE NOTES
• I’m really excited … Notice the emphasis on “really.” “Really” is used to emphasize the 
adjective “excited” here.
• Birthday party Notice that the normal stress for a compound noun falls on the first 
element of the compound.
• Aren’t you? This negative tag is used to show that the speaker expects a positive 
answer. Patty assumes that Susan is also looking forward to the party.
• She’ll be 55 Notice that “55” is stressed here. This detail answers the question “How 
old is she?”
• Fourteenth Notice that we use “th” for ordinal numbers, starting with 4 [but first, 
second and third]. The stress is on the second syllable [fourTEENTH]. Compare this with 
“fortieth: 40th” [FORtieth].
• She’s going to be ... Notice how this is pronounced like “gonna be.” Instead of four 
syllables “go/ing/to/be” there are three syllables “ga/na/be.”
