Adult pronunciation mistakes are not random. They are almost entirely predictable from the sound system of the language you already speak. Linguists call it transfer — and the useful consequence is that if I know your first language, I can tell you in advance what you are getting wrong. The six Malayalam contrasts that carry meaning and that foreigners collapse. Malayalam — Manglish — English: ത vs ട — tha vs ta — dental against retroflex. For ത the tongue tip touches the back of the upper front teeth (the t of French, Spanish, Italian, Russian). For ട it curls back to the ridge behind them. ല vs ള vs ഴ — la vs La vs zha — plain l, retroflex l, and the famous one. ഴ is a retroflex approximant: curl the tongue back and let air pass without contact. It exists in Malayalam and Tamil and almost nowhere else. Do not substitute an English r or a zh sound for ഴ. Curl further back than feels reasonable and let it stay vague — it is not a sharp sound. Consonant length — അമ്മ (amma). That doubled letter is not decoration. Hold it. The m lasts twice as long as a single m. സംവൃതോകാരം — samvruthokaaram — the closed final u in വീട് (veedu), നാട് (naadu), കാട് (kaadu). Not a full u: a very brief, unrounded, central vowel, near the last sound of English "sofa" but shorter and further back. English speakers either drop it or turn it into a full oo. Both are wrong and both are instantly audible. Then the diagnosis by first language — what English, Hindi, Arabic and Romance speakers each get wrong, and the specific fix for your mouth. Slow and clear, for English speakers, heritage learners and the Malayali diaspora. No prior classes needed. What is your first language? Comment below and I will tell you which one to drill first.
