Causative Verbs in Malayalam — Making Someone Do Something | Learn Malayalam #327
Beschreibung
How Malayalam says that one person made another person do something — and why half the verbs you already know were secretly built this way all along.
Malayalam adds a causer with a suffix, usually -ഇക്ക് (-ikk) or -പ്പിക്ക് (-ppikk) on the verb stem. Once you see it, dozens of separate words you memorised collapse into one machine.
I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken.
THE PAIRS — LISTEN FOR THE SUFFIX
ചെയ്യുക - cheyyuka - to do
ചെയ്യിക്കുക - cheyyikkuka - to make someone do
കുടിക്കുക - kudikkuka - to drink
കുടിപ്പിക്കുക - kudippikkuka - to make someone drink
ചിരിക്കുക - chirikkuka - to laugh
ചിരിപ്പിക്കുക - chirippikkuka - to make someone laugh
കരയുക - karayuka - to cry
കരയിക്കുക - karayikkuka - to make someone cry
കേൾക്കുക - kelkkuka - to hear
കേൾപ്പിക്കുക - kelppikkuka - to play something for someone to hear
THE ONES YOU ALREADY USE WITHOUT KNOWING
കാണുക - kaanuka - to see
കാണിക്കുക - kanikkuka - to show, literally to cause to see
അറിയുക - ariyuka - to know
അറിയിക്കുക - ariyikkuka - to inform, literally to cause to know
ഓർക്കുക - orkkuka - to remember
ഓർമിപ്പിക്കുക - ormippikkuka - to remind
നിൽക്കുക - nilkkuka - to stand, to stop
നിർത്തുക - nirthuka - to stop something
ഓടുക - oduka - to run
ഓടിക്കുക - odikkuka - to drive a vehicle, to cause it to run
ഉറങ്ങുക - uranguka - to sleep
ഉറക്കുക - urakkuka - to put a child to sleep
പഠിക്കുക - padikkuka - to learn
പഠിപ്പിക്കുക - padippikkuka - to teach, to cause to learn
That last pair is the whole lesson in one line. Malayalam does not have a separate word for teach. Teaching is causing learning.
Which pair surprised you? Comment and I will give you five more like it.
