Professionelle LehrkraftWhy I "forgot" Valentine's Day (A Colombian Secret) đ€«
ÂĄHola a todos! âš
If you noticed I was quiet on February 14th, itâs not because Iâm a Grinch... itâs because Iâm Colombian. đšđŽ
In my city, Cali (The World Capital of Salsa đ), we don't really do "San ValentĂn" in February. We are much more patient! We wait until September to celebrate "DĂa de Amor y Amistad."
Why? Because in Colombia, we like to make sure the love (and the party) lasts all year round.
But, since I know many of you did celebrated it last weekend, letâs talk about how we express "the feels" in the land of coffee and salsa. Here are 3 Colombian slang words for love you won't find in a standard textbook:
"Estar tragado/a" đ
Literal: To be swallowed.
Real: To be head-over-heels, crazily in love with someone.
Example: "Estoy tragado de mi novia."
"Tener un cuento" đ
Literal: To have a story.
Real: To have a "thing" or a casual romance. No labels, just vibes.
"Echar los perros" đ
Literal: To throw the dogs at someone.
Real: To flirt or hit on someone.
đŹ QUICK QUESTION:
Does your country celebrate love in February, or do you have a secret tradition like us? Tell me in the comments, and Iâll correct your Spanish for free! đ
