What are the differences between Cabinets and Cupboards, are there differences in material used or items stored in them? e.g. currently I thought, cupboards are a type of cabinet usually used for storing food items, therefore generally found in the kitchen, where as cabinets are more generalits where any type of item can be stored in. PS: Also in Chinese it seems they are all called 柜子 correct?

一般來說是櫃子,在廚房裡放碗的是櫥櫃,在房間裡的是衣櫃,放鞋子的是鞋櫃,放書的是書櫃,床旁邊的是床頭櫃。

Where I am from (Northern England) they are the same. Cupboard is more commonly used.

I also assume that cabinets are smaller than cupboards. For example, if I'm told to put something in the cabinet, I imagine it'll be put in a smaller, more secure unit than a cupboard, which is more of a 'free for all'. Could be a contextual difference. :)

I think the difference is with materials stored in them. Cabinets are used as a multipurpose storage unit … cupboards are used to store flatware, cups, saucers and plates
