In order to beat the obstacles that followed me throughout my passion for foreign language learning I had to use a strategy to improve my vocabulary everyday, all of which include learning in context. When I studied Chinese, for example, I had a five subject notebook and dedicated one of each section to a topic, depending on my level and interests, i.e. food, household items, finance, and music. Then, I would spend a few weeks focused on learning words related to these five main subjects and categorizing them separately. When I reviewed vocabulary, I would review them topic by topic. I would also build lists of synonyms, so whenever I defined a word, I would list a few other synonyms in the target language so my vocabulary would become more sophisticated and diverse. This helped me immensely and I’m sure it can help you as well. The reason I’m passion about pursuing foreign languages is because I realized that the world is globalizing more each day, and corporations are seeking tomorrow’s leaders. One out of three corporations in the U.S. are owned or based overseas. Employers value fluent multilingual employees, because they can communicate with overseas subsidiaries and partners. A University of Guelph study showed that even if employees do not speak their second language at work, on average they still earn more than monolinguals do. Prof. Christofides stated, “Second-language skills may indicate those individuals are stronger in unmeasured labor market characteristics such as ability, cognition, perseverance and quality education.” This is why I won’t give up, I know the future holds better for me.
