Cite, site or sight? Cite, site and sight are examples of homophones. Homophones are words that are spelled differently but sound the same. Cite is a verb meaning to make reference to or to quote something. "She cited the relevant journals for her assignment." Site is a noun meaning location. "This was the site where the inauguration took place." Other words with 'site' in them include website, campsite, onsite and offsite. Sight is both a noun and a verb that refers to seeing.  "They sighted the fireworks and colourful lights before they reached the carnival. It was quite a sight." Other words with 'sight' in them include hindsight, foresight, eyesight and sightseeing.
