How to learn new words in English
Let me start with the bad news: there is no secret method that will magically help you remember new words. If someone tells you otherwise, they're selling something. No shortcuts — but there are smarter ways to learn.
Take flashcards. They work for some people, but on their own they're limited. A word on a card is a puzzle piece without the rest of the picture. You can flip it a hundred times, but without context your brain has nothing to attach it to.
Learn words in context
Meet a new word — learn it inside a phrase. Get rid of is more useful than rid. I can't afford to waste time on this teaches you more than afford and waste on two separate cards. Context gives a word a place in what you already know, and that's what makes it stick.
Knowing the translation ≠ knowing the word
Recognising a word in a text is passive vocabulary. Using it when you speak, without stopping to think — that's active vocabulary, and that's the one that matters. The only way to move a word from passive to active is to use it: retell a story, describe your day, write a few sentences. The method doesn't matter as long as you're producing, not just consuming.
Space it out
Review at increasing intervals, not randomly. And accept that you will forget — that's how memory works. Every time you revisit a word and recover it, the connection gets stronger.
The bigger picture
A translation is knowledge. Using the word in conversation is a skill. The moment you learn what a word means, start using it — in speech, in writing, however you can. That's where learning happens.
What about you? Have you found a way to make new vocabulary stick?
