The answer to that question maybe different for each person. In my case, It's the listening first. Keep practicing your listening skills, then speaking/reading would be much easier. Hope it helps! 😉

Simple things such as greetings and compliments

My strong opinion is that you should learn compliments first. Saying, "I love American" is a great way to start a conversation with Americans. Then you should learn "I want to learn English" and "I just started learning English." Learn "I don't know very much English" and conversation starters like "What's your name?"
