Actually, this appears to be a *grammar* question. “During” is a preposition, so it must be followed by a noun, not a verb (“perform”). Since there is no determiner (a, the, this, that, or a possessive), the noun must either be plural or uncountable. “Match” and “game” are countable, so only “play” works in this context. English has thousands of vocabulary words, but only a few essential grammar rules. The use of determiners is one such essential grammar rule. Note that a native speaker does not consciously do the analysis that I gave you — we have internalized the rules and use them automatically.
