When do you use the symbol "-" in texts?

In Spanish we use "..." to show that there is a space of time happening betwen phrases. But I 've seen the - symbol here and there. Does it have the same usage?

In Spanish we use "..." to show that there is a space of time happening betwen phrases. But I 've seen the - symbol here and there. Does it have the same usage?

If you want to search, "..." is called ellipsis and "-" is called hyphen. The hyphen (which is short) is sometimes confused with the en dash (the width of the uppercase letter N) and the em dash (the width of the uppercase letter M).

One of the uses of the hyphen is to show that some modifying words belong together. 
+ the decision-making group 
+ the 8-year-old boy 
+ a two-thirds majority 
+ an up-to-date story 
Or, separate to clarify meaning. 
+ re-sign (sign again, not resign)

There are many detailed rules about using the hyphen and the other punctuation marks. There are some differences among American, British, Canadian, and other dialects of English.

It's used for repeating / quoting what someone has said, like in a dialogue.

No it's not the same . This symbol is called quote-unquote . This is used when we are quoting someone else's dialogue as it is .

For eg :  She asked me "Where are you going?"
I replied "I m going to the market"
