I don't think that's a proper use of "etc.", but I can't necessarily rule it out without more context. You should use "etc." when it is already clear what kind of thing you are talking about, which usually requires two or more example. Also, it is not clear what "tells" means in this sentence.

The second sentence is good, I don't understand the meaning of the first sentence about the sportsman, though, especially the 'etc' part.
