Can anyone help me with the question below? Thanks.
What does ‘given’ mean in the following?
…
‘Given’ is an interesting word in that it is commonly used in four different parts of speech: verb, adjective, preposition and noun!
The preposition and noun meanings are similar.
Given that he’ll have a good time with friends, he wasn’t concerned that it might rain. (Taking into account, preposition)
The good time with his friends was a given. (Established fact, noun)
The givens are that it is a right triangle, with an opposite side of length 1 and a hypotenuse of length 2.
