/ma/ is like your /but/ with one notable exception:

forms of the kind: 'everybody but me' don't use 'ma' but they use
'tranne' or 'ma non' (or different constructs):

Examples:
Tutti tranne me;
Tutti ma non io; (when 'io' is subject)
A tutti ma non a me.
Per tutti tranne che per me.
Tutti hanno un libro ma non io. Tutti hanno un libro tranne me.
(you should never use 'tranne io').

/pero'/ is very similar to 'but', and usually is used in concataneting
logical sequences, where some degree of discordance exists.

/bensi'/ is just old fashioned, nothing to do with being or being not polite.

Examples:

1a. ma cosa fai?
1b. ma cosa vuoi da me?

(in (1a), (1b) 'ma' has a meaning of: surprise,need to have an explanation, reproach,

here you CAN'T use /pero'/)

1c. Ma come? Sei ancora a Roma? (meaning: surprise due to something non coherent with the plans)

1d. Ma come hai fatto a riparare la macchina da solo? (meaning: surprise emphasizing a good result)

(/Pero'/ can't be used in (1c), (1d))

2a. non abbiamo due stanze singole {ma, pero'} abbiamo una stanza libera con due letti.

2b. noi arriviamo a Torino alle 12, {ma,pero'} il treno per Aosta parte alle 11:40, cosi'
non puo' andare, dobbiamo andare a Torino con un altro treno.

Nei dialoghi in cui esiste un contrasto di opinione (esempio: lavoratore che chiede qualcosa di
giusto al suo capo), il /ma/ indica maggiore impazienza e contrarieta' del /pero'/, che e' piu'
neutro rispetto alle emozioni, e rappresenta una contrarieta' puramente logica;
in questo caso sono sfumature (simple shades) di significato;

In modern italian we use mostly MA and PERò. Bensì is typical of a very very polite way of speaking.

4. In alcune frasi l'uso di /ma/ quando indica un secondo elemento di scelta,
permette di non ripetere il verbo oppure il termine /si'/

ok: Non voglio questo, ma quello!
NO: Non voglio questo, pero' quello!
ok: Non voglio questo, pero' voglio quello!
ok: Non voglio questo, pero' quello si'!

5. Queste mele non sono rosse ma verdi!

6. Sono arrivato in ritardo, e' vero, {ma, pero'} ti ho portato una
cosa che forse ti piacera'.

In (5) there is a meaning of reproach from the buyer, and /pero'/ would not work here,
will be completely misleading.

In (6) the contrast given by 'ma' or ' pero' ' is used as a request to be excused, and both
terms will do the job.
