What does ' bandwagon' mean in the sentence ?

I've watched a Ted talk on website. The speech was given by a speaker who named  Patricia Ryan. 

I found there is a sentence that I got a bit confused. There is a part of transcript.

"No longer just a foreign language on the school curriculum, and no longer the sole domain of mother England, it has become a bandwagon for every English-speaking nation on earth."

question 1: what does bandwagon mean in the sense? (Does the term refer as 'trend' ?)

question 2: why she said " the sole domain of ...." (Does it mean she want to being respect to own country?)

"Bandwagon" is when people who didn't like or do something before start liking or doing something because it's popular. Usually, it's used in the expression "jump on the bandwagon," which means to do something because everybody else is doing it. So yes, she probably wants to say that it's a trend.

The word came about because American circuses used to parade through towns to advertise their events in the 1800s. One of the wagons, or carts, usually had a band.


As for question two, "the sole domain" means that English used to only belong to England.

bandwagon - a particular activity or cause that has suddenly become fashionable or popular.

As for me, everything becomes clear also with second question, isn't it?

"Bandwagon" are those people who follows the trend, or in simple term, they just go with the current flow. for example, just because people are now talking about NBA Play Off these days, they just jump in and says stuff about NBA even they like it or not.
