The Mother Tongue: English and How It Got That Way, by Bill Bryson. I don't know whether learners would find Bill Bryson easy to read, but he is one of the best nonfiction writers I know, with a wonderful sense of humor. 

Deception Point from Dan Brown. I liked it, but I hated the last chapter where the guy gets the girl, it só terribly cliché! Tore it out, so in case I reread it to practice my vocabulary I do not have to irritate me again. Presently reading Inferno of the same writer. If it has a similar last chapter please advice me, I tear it out before I have to read it. :-)
