For me, "on" has 3 different meanings: people in common (Ex: Au Japon, on est très gentils); nous (Ex: On va aller au cinéma ce soir); someone (on frappe à la porte).

With "ont", it's a conjugated form of the verb "avoir" in "Ils/elles" (Ex: Ils ont une grande maison). Hope this helps :)
