Learning a new language

Hello Guys 

I have been wondering if I can learn a language by watching movies and listening to music, I am really interested in learning English and French, after that languages, I could learn some other.

Could you tell me What do you think about it and how have you learn a new language?

It's possible, but not as easy as some people make it out to be. For example, in order to learn from movies/music, you already need to understand a big portion of the content (I'd say about 70%+), otherwise, you'll end up engaging in passive listening which is not effective for language learning. 

A good way of learning through movies/music is to use subtitles/lyrics as your guide. Listening to the same thing multiple times also helps.

it is definitely a good thing to watch movies and to listen to music. This way you learn how to pronunce words and learn vocabulary. You lern vocabulary and grammar while getting the context of a story, rather than learning something theoretically off head.

I don't think someone can learn a language though without doing anything else  besides watching TV and listening to songs.

I think it depends on the target language. Like, if your native language is Spanish, being in touch with your target language might be more useful in the beginner levels if your target language is another romance language, like Portuguese or Italian, and maybe even French. It seems to me that there is a huge issue on how much you actually absorb that depends on your language skills (level etc) and previous experiences... what most people forget is that languages are related, so your experience with one language also helps with another one, specially if they are related. That is how I rationalize my experience, since Spanish movies and TV series have helped me a lot, French ones mildly, and although I consume a lot of Asian culture and once tried picking up some Japanese and later Korean, it didn't seem to do me nearly as much as consuming French and Spanish did even at really beginner level (of Spanish and French).
