Which version(dialect) of French should I learn?

Hi, I want to start learning French again but I'm not sure which accent or dialect I want to learn. I was thinking about learning Belgian or Quebecois French. Or maybe the accent of Southern France. Which is a good accent to learn? What is the easiest dialect and which is the nicest sounding and clear?

Thanks!

Who do you plan to speak French with? I think that will help determine which accent you might want to focus on. For me it's less about accent and more about local idioms, customs etc. I live in Canada and in close proximity to French Canadians, so for me it's important to understand how they speak French. Even within a given area, you will still hear many accents, so it's hard to pin point any particular one. Ideally you should be able to understand people with various accents, though admittedly some may be trickier than others.

If you don't have any immediate plans to interact with people from a particular region, I guess the best would be to start with a "standard French" as suggested by Bernhard.

I think it's best to learn the standard French in the beginning. Acquiring accents is easier for later phase when you are already more proficient, or when you already feel comfortable to have conversation in French. I have French-speaking people from France, Quebec, and Africa, and I can hear their different accents very clearly while speaking. You can learn the accents by doing lots of listening. If noone is available around you, try listening to radio from different French-speaking countries for the accents. You can use tunein.com

''Basic French'' (the French spoken in France) would be easier to learn, because in Quebec, we have a big accent and that makes some words very difficult to understand. Our pronounciation is different and we have words that don't even exist in the french vocabulary and that you will never learn if you learn French :)
