Heather
Recommended Text & Audio for Learning Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig)

Unfortunately, I won't be able to take italki classes for a couple more months. I'm hoping to work on some self-study in the meantime though. Does anyone have recommendations for good textbooks or audio?  I have the 'Teach Yourself Gaelic' book currently, but I'm not thrilled with it. I'm looking into buying the 'Colloquial Scottish Gaelic' book and CD. Any opinions on this book?

I have found some great web resources, like learngaelic.net, but I think I'd stay on task better with a physical workbook.

Hi Heather,

I used Scottish Gaelic in Twelve Weeks while in university and still turn to it as a reference/refresher resource. It has exersizes and such to gauge understanding and accuracy, which may be helpful to you. Cothrom Ionnsachaidh could be a possibility if you like a grammar-based approach.

All the best,

Jason

I received my 'Colloquial Gaelic' book and I really like it! The audio is available for free download from the website, so it's really easy to read the book and play audio on my tablet without fussing with CDs. I've started pronunciation practice using the audio, but it's still intimidating for me at this point.

I also bought 'Scottish Gaelic in 12 Weeks' and the in-depth explanations are definitely helpful. It's going to be a very good resource. Thanks for the recommendation, Jason!

Once you get beyond very basic Gaelic, you could try Litir do Luchd-Ionnsachaidh for some reading and listening practice.

Oh, thanks for the recommendation Jason!  I think I would definitely stay on task better with a university-type textbook.  I'll check both of them out.
