Language learning goals for 2018

Wow, 2017 is almost over already. Everything came and went so quickly!


New year is a time when people (English people, at least) start setting goals for the year ahead, things that they would like to achieve over the next 365 days. These are often written in a future tense

e.g. I will study English every day

Experts now say it is better to use a present tense and refer to a concrete, measurable objective. This helps form a clear image in our mind of us achieving the objective, which encourages us to work harder. 

e.g. I have learned 100 new English phrasal verbs - June 31st 2018.

Note I've also added a date, which tells us when the goal needs to have been completed by.

Now for my question: What are your language learning goals for 2018? Can you express them using a present tense? What action will you take to ensure you achieve them?

Hi sändy böy! I think Indians have a nice accent when speaking English, the important thing is that it is intelligible and doesn't get in the way of being understood. If you want to improve your grammar in 2018, you could set some goals that focus on the areas you know you need to improve. Here are some ideas:

I have mastered the grammar areas required for my test - July 31st

I use 1st, 2nd and 3rd conditionals accurately when speaking - (add date)

I am confident in using the correct -ing or infinitive form with common verb patterns - (add date)


The idea is to use a present tense rather than a future tense (which makes the objective seem further away). You could try this in your own language too.

Hi, Rob! You are absolutely right. I need to set goals to focus on the areas I need to improve. I learn grammar, everyday. It whets my appetite and makes it insatiable. I troll grammar for my English. I google it, everyday. I read grammar books. When I don't get something at English, I ask the same at italki and I fortunately get its answer with clear and precise explanation. That's what makes me to visit italki everyday. I'd love to write more but I am typing on my smart phone and it makes my index finger exhausted. My friends come to me If they find something confusing at English. I try my level best to give them answer precisely and If I do not know I ask even Mr. Google.

I will improve my grammar as much as I can.
I am going to face some exams for my job and almost 50% is being asked from English comprehension. I love speaking English. I wish I would get time in 2018 for improving my grammar. Most of the Indians speak English with native language accent. It seems incredibly strange to me. I am Indian, too. 

I will score high in my exams.
If I get spare time, I will go to any English institution for beefing up my English grammar. 

When I understand English fully, I can understand any subject. It helps me even in scoring high in other subjects as well.

I love English so much. I am student of English.
