Lo, la, los, las son pronombres átonos que sustituyen en las oraciones al objeto directo. Por ejemplo: 

He almorzado frijoles negros dos veces la semana pasada. Los he comido.

María reparó el coche esta mañana. Ella lo reparó. 

Marcos hizo la tarea muy bien. Él la hizo muy bien.

Jorge tendió las sábanas en el patio hace una hora. Él las tendió.

  In the examples that you listed Lo is a direct object pronoun. It replaces "a thing" for example. I read the book = Yo leí el libro.  I read it, = Yo lo leí. 

Lo is a funny little word though and can be used in other constructs like " lo que" which means what. 

Lo sé ---> I know IT.

Es lo mismo ---> IT is the same.

Lo encontraré ---> I will found IT.

Lo siento ---> I'm sorry about IT. In this case I'm not sure if in English you can say "I'm sorry about it" or only "I'm sorry".
