I have homeschooled my five kids, and this was the best experience for us as a family. They have grown to be motivated learners, independent thinkers, and creators. They were able to go with their own pace, and interests, pursue their talents, learn to do stuff in the house, do sports. It was hard on me in the beginning, to establish discipline and help them learn to teach themselves, but now they are very thankful and definitely want to homeschool their own kids. The biggest difference I see is that homeschooling establishes this genuine motivation for learning.  If the atmosphere at home is educational, it flourishes. Children love learning and reading, we only need to support it.

Homeschooling is illegal in Germany but even if I had the choice I'd still go for traditional schooling. My school years were a positive experience and I don't think that I'm capable to teach all subjects to my children. My husband and I are already failing at teaching our heritage languages to our kids. I can't imagine to teach them maths and other stuff as well.

How does homeschooling practically work? One of the parents has to stay at home, right? Do you have to follow a certain curriculum?

Definitely traditional schooling. They need to socialize with other people and have a regular activity outside home. I know how bored I can get when I don't work and don't go out much for a while. Also, teaching is a lot of work for a parent, it would be hard to find the time, especially for parents who have their own career,  and I'm not confident I could do it well. Finally, I want them to get good education and their degree to be recognized. It may depend on where you live but as far as I know education at regular schools is still better and more valued than the alternatives. Home schooling and online degrees can be an option for students who are also working, including professional athletes, or those with health problems. But for those whose main occupation is to study, while their parents have other occupations, it doesn't really make much sense to me.

Traditional schooling. I think it builds character and a sense of relatability with a large amount of other people your age. Plus, my parents and relatives shouldn't have to put off their lives to rear me, or have to pay extra for tutors etc. If I hadn't have gone to school, I wouldn't had friends, wouldn't have done sport, etc. Though the structure of education in the US definitely needs a makeover, theres something about the shared experience of school that I like.
