Jello
I'll never be able to speak English fast.
I always think before I speak. This process takes a long time and prevents me from being spontaneous. Actually I've been learning English for about 8 years BUT only by grammer and reading. I've never had a daily conversation with someone face to face. I don't know some common phrases to express myself more effectively that's why I sound unnatural and weird.

Honestly I have problems with communication in my native language too. I am so shy and hesitated to talk to people. What should I do ? I have 4 months before I start my new school whose native language is English.

Jello....the word is "fluently". Check the spelling again....I can help you more with the speaking skills. I will engage you in conversations.

I would not say that speaking fast is all that important. In quite a lot of the English-speaking world, people actually speak relatively slowly. I am often struck by how English is a slower language than, say, Spanish.

My key pieces of advice are:
1. Don't be scared of making mistakes. This is natural in any language and whoever you are speaking to will understand. If you take time thinking in your head how to say it perfectly grammatically correctly, it will take a long time for the words to come out. If you just blurt out the first thing that comes into your head, 9 times out of 10 the other person will understand anyway. If you have a good grounding in grammer, you will likely realise afterwards how you should have said it. And then next time you need to say it you will remember.
2. The more you practice speaking, the easier it will be. Talk to yourself, aloud or in your head, in English as much as you can. Whenever you have the opportunity to practice with a real person, use it. There are many great teachers here in Italki who can help you with this if you would like.
3. If you can't remember a word, just guess, or use other words to describe it. You'll be surprised how much of the time you are right.

It sounds like part of the 'problem' is simply being a bit shy (even in your native language), rather than being fully to do with the fact that this is a second language. If this is just your personality, there is nothing wrong with that. If you do not like this about yourself, you can try to change it (again the more you try to speak to people, put yourself out of your comfort zone, etc, the easier it will become - I promise!). But don't feel like you have to change this about yourself just because society expects you to. There is nothing wrong with being an introvert.

Hello Jello,

By reading your text I have no problem understanding you and I do not think you come off sounding ‘weird’. Since you haven’t been able to practice your English with a face to face conversation don’t worry about taking a moment to think on how to respond. Language learning takes time. Grammatically I’d say you have it down very well.
It’s hard to answer when there is a few questions I have to ask first-
How is your comprehension when someone speaks to you in English? Does it take time for you to translate? Is your new school in your native country or are you studying abroad? Will the teachers be native English speakers or?

There are many different dialects of English is why I ask.. I struggle understanding some dialects from other countries and it takes me a moment to respond even though I speak English. Haha

Depending on you’re answer to those questions will help me in giving you better advice.

Don’t fret about being shy. That’s why Italki is awesome. It’s a great way to have a one on one conversation with someone. So if you’re going to school in a host country. Example - Ireland, England, the US, etc. I would recommended finding a community tutor from that country and try practicing with them. Learn some of their slang words. Some just casual conversation skills.

I hope this helped :)

Sorry wrong word choice again. I meant "fluetnly" not fast. I don't want to be fast I just want to speak without stumbling on words. :( The thing is that I don't know how to start working on it.
