What are the national symbols of your country?
I’m from Germany and our national plant is the oak tree (die Eiche), that’s why we have oak leaf clusters on the German 1-, 2- and 5- Cent coins. Our national animal is a black eagle. It is displayed on our coat of arms and in the German 1- and 2-Euro coins. And the most iconic building is the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. It’s a symbol of the separation and unity of Germany because during the separation the Brandenburg Gate stood just next to the Berlin Wall and wasn’t accessible to the public. It was a historic moment when they teared down the wall and people could walk through the gate again. The Brandenburg gate is depicted on the 10-, 20- and 50-Cent coins.

What about your country? What is your national animal, plant, landmark, symbol?

In the United States, every state has its own set of state emblems and symbols. States love to have them. It is something that state legislators can do for schoolchildren. They love it--"we got a law passed." In 2018, at the request of schoolchildren, New Jersey made the bog turtle its Official State Reptile.

State mottoes, state "demonyms"--the name for people from that state--state flowers, animals, and birds are somewhat real.

For example, I know that motto of Wisconsin is "Onward," and the Kansas motto is "Ad Astra Per Aspera." I know that people from Indiana are "Hoosiers," and people from North Carolina are "Tarheels." I know that the roadrunner is the state bird of New Mexico, and the columbine is the state flower of Colorado.

I live in Massachusetts, and our state flower is the mayflower. US readers will say "of course." In the United States, everyone knows that "the Mayflower is the ship that brought the Pilgrims to Plymouth Rock in 1620."

You can see a (crazy) list of the Massachusetts symbols here:

I call it "crazy" because most Bay Staters have no idea what our State Glacial Rock or our State Polka or our State Donut or our State Soil Series is. People could guess that the cranberry is our official State Berry. Massachusetts is a major producer of cranberries. People could guess that Boston Cream Pie is our Official State Dessert.

And everyone would know that the cod is our Official State Fish. A wood sculpture of a codfish hangs in our state legislature. It reminds us that the cod was a source of our state's early commercial success.

I take my hat off to New Jersey for designating Streptomyces griseus their Official State Microbe. It is the microbe that makes streptomycin. It is the organism that make streptomycin, the second antibiotic discovered (after pencillin), and it was discovered in New Jersey.

Drasvi, Germans and Scandinavians eat rye bread too. The more to the north you go, the more black bread people make.
