People who are learning Urdu
I'm very interested in getting to know other people who are studying Urdu. My main struggle with the language is that it is not a popular language to learn and hence the study resources are pretty limited. I'd love to exchange experiences about learning Urdu and getting tips on useful resources :) I'm especially looking for multimedia resources and (children's) books in Nastaliq that include vowel signs. I'm all set when it comes to a study textbook, but thanks a lot for all the tips so far!

I can totally imagine! I admire people who practice verbally with so much ease. It takes me a long time to get comfortable speaking unfortunately. It's easier for me to acquire theoretical knowledge, but then when speaking it becomes hard. And then I know people who get fluent within months, which is always because they dare to speak a lot :)

Would you believe that I can understand and express myself in Spanish as long as the subject isn't too advanced, without ever using a single textbook? My German was the same, though now it's rusty with lack of practice. I simply speak and listen as much as I can with real people. That's also the natural way of language acquisition. At present I'm attempting Russian more or less the same way.

There is a 685-page English-language textbook, Beginning Urdu: A Complete Course by Joshua Pien and Fauzia Farooki published by Georgetown University Press.

The pdf is widely available online. Google it.

The spoken language is pretty much the same in India and most of us speak the colloquial form of it. In fact, this is where the language originated, though it's now in wider use in Pakistan. They tend to use a more literary form with more Persian and Arabic words. Also, the script is different from Hindi even though the distinction between spoken Hindi and Urdu is rather academic.
