Hi everybody, I am Quentin from France. I try to improve my english and be more fluent when I talk in face to face. It's been a long time I learn english at school but, to my mind, it is not the good way of teaching if you want to improve it !
The best way is to speak it and listen as often we can. It is the same as children when they are learning their native language : they listen before speaking.
The problem is that, in french schools, we often have french teachers who talk to us in french but not enough in english ! It is only when I went to england for 4 months that I had really improved my english !
What do you think of that ? What is the best way for you to really improve our skills in a foreign language?
This is the question that everybody wants to know the answer. In my view, everyone has a particular way of learning. Some people, when they start studying, they read and write a lot, so they'll need to improve their speaking and listening. Others, due to their jobs, are obliged to speak and as a consequence they will also improve the listening. It's difficult to find a person who has the same level as mine. Most Brazilians have basic or intermediate English, so I improve my English watching videos from youtube, or channels like CNN and BBC. I participate in forums for students and teachers, and I write, write and write. For me, this is the best way to organize my ideas, so when I have to speak I notice that the sentences a more consicise and elaborate.
Hi, I`m Olya from Russia. I absolutly agree. Teacher explains all the grammar rules in Russian in our lessons and it is quite difficult to improve our English this way. I think that the best way to do it is language immersion when you go travelling (or living) without enough good level of language and just speak and listen, speak and listen :)
Yes for sure ;-) It is when we are completely stuck that we can see it. And obviously, as you said it, we can be understood everytime if we make efforts ^^ Moreover it is by this way that we can learn easily
You are right,Quentin.When you have no choice and you must use English to communicate,you can do it.If I take you now and drop you into the centre of London,and you have to buy food to survive,you will manage to talk,right?
Yes ! But why everybody know that and do nothing for it? The only time I have improved my english it is when I had an english native teacher ! Because he didn't speak french at all so we were obliged to speak to him in english.
When we had a "french" english teacher, a lot of students, when they didn't know how to tell something, spoke in french. It was impossible with the english native teacher ;-)
