IELTS Preparation: food production Topic: Nowadays, food can be produced much more cheaply and in greater quantities thanks to modern technology. Many people believe that these changes in the way we produce food may have harmful effects on consumers and communities. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Nowadays, modern technology has been widely used in food production. Although this has made cheap and large quantity food production possible, some people wary that it might be detrimental to consumers and communities. However, I believe their assertion is arbitrary. The most important advantage of modern agriculture is that it helps feed world population. It is generally acknowledged that world population has boomed these years, thereby causing food scarcity, especially in developing countries. Since the land for agriculture is limited, modern technology enables to produce more food each acre of land and with less human labor. Therefore, food problem has been resolved to some extent thanks to modern technology. One argument often presented by opponents is that it causes detrimental influence on rural communities. This is because many farmers might leave land to find jobs in cities since modern agriculture releases them from everyday chore of farming with modern machines and technology. As a result, rural communities are not as close as before and some even vanish. This is partly true. However, with the establishment of modern facilities such as theatres in rural areas, rural residents might still choose to stay locally if they do not need to seek modern life in outside world. Another point needed to be considered is that humans should be given the right to choose where to live. Modern agriculture offers this opportunity. Therefore, the effects on community are complicated. Another wary of opponents is that it may cause detrimental influence on health in the long run. However, there is no scientific evidence showing food produced by modern technology is harmful. Besides, almost every country has strict restriction and limitation in chemical stuff use in food production to ensure food in safe range. To conclude, the advantages of modern agriculture far outweigh its disadvantages since the detrimental influence on consumers is unproven and effects on communities are profound and complicated.
