I sometimes struggle with how to translate "kuchiguse" into English myself. We have various words like "verbal tic" and "catchphrase", but they don't seem quite right to me. In my opinion, "pet phrase" is the closest in terms of meaning. Out of interest, my pet phrase is "shan", a Scottish (or perhaps just an Edinburgh) word. It means something like "unfair" or "cruel".
