My weekend at Vienna
One week ago I spent my weekend at Vienna. I visited this city special for looking performance at Vienna State Opera. Vienna State Opera is one of most important opera theatres in the world. Many famous singers sang at the Vienna Opera. Contemporary building of Opera was founded at 1869 and opened the opera ‘Don Juan’ by Mozart.
In our century, many opera and ballet performances were staged at the Vienna Opera House. Such singers as Maria Callas, Mario Del Monaco, Fedora Barbiery, Irina Arkhipova, Elena Obraztsova, Vladimir Atlantov sang in this theatre.
One month ago I found out that one of my favorite singers will sing at opera ‘Roberto Devero’ by Gaetano Donizetti. It is Edita Gruberova. I bought a ticket online and a month later flew to Vienna. Gruberova’s career is coming to an end as she is not young. She is already 68. But her voice still light and airy, her vocal technique is still perfect, and her acting is amazing.
In this opera Edita Gruberova plays role of Elisabeth, Queen of England. She loves Roberto Devere, Cont of Essex. But Roberto loves Sarah, who was forced to marry by Queen. In the story of the opera The Queen and Sarah’s husband learn about affair of Roberoto and Sarah. Queen orders the execution of Roberto. Sarah want to save her lover and going to confess to Queen about her affair and to bring the ring that Queen gave Roberto. Sarah's husband prevents her to revenge Roberto. When Sarah comes to the queen, the Queen was informed that Roberto is already dead.
Edita Gruberova as Queen was convincing. Her acting was expressive and passionate. Her voice is played by the set of colors from light piano on the top notes in the love scenes to sobs and growls in the tragic moments. She impressed the audience with her talent and people responded to she with stormy applause.
I am very glad that I had the opportunity to see Madame Edita on stage.
